ABOUT KM3D

Engineering with practical purpose.

We help people work through practical engineering problems. Sometimes that means developing a product from an early sketch. Other times, it means recreating a discontinued part, documenting an existing facility, or building a working prototype to find out whether an idea is worth pursuing. Founded by Moe Kopahi, a Mechatronics Systems Engineering graduate from Simon Fraser University, KM3D brings together experience in mechanical design, electronics, prototyping, and manufacturing. Over the past decade, product development has been at the centre of our work. That experience has shaped how we approach projects: understand the problem, ask the difficult questions early, build something we can test, and improve it based on what we learn.

Our four departments

Product Development

Product Development helps inventors, startups, and established businesses develop and improve physical products. We support the process from concept and design through prototyping, testing, and manufacturing coordination. Depending on the project, that can involve mechanical components, electronics, software, or a combination of all three. We also help clients consider production methods, costs, and intellectual property as their designs take shape.

3D Scanning

3D Scanning captures physical spaces and objects and turns them into useful digital information. We work with architecture, engineering, construction, and industrial clients to document buildings, facilities, equipment, and individual parts. Our deliverables include point clouds, CAD models, Building Information Models (BIM), and digital representations of existing conditions, with the level of detail and file formats chosen to suit the work ahead.

Drone Technologies

Drone Technologies develops Canadian robotic systems for applications in the air, on land, on the water, and underwater. Our development work includes unmanned vehicles, intelligent sensor networks, control software, and modular payload systems. We are building these technologies for applications such as inspection, environmental monitoring, emergency response, and defence, with a focus on Canadian design, assembly, and control over the systems we develop.

Digital Library

Digital Library brings together free and paid CAD models, 3D-scanned models, and custom software. It gives designers, engineers, makers, and businesses access to digital resources they can use in their own projects. The goal is straightforward: make useful work available to more people and help them spend less time starting from scratch.

These departments build on one another. A scan can become the starting point for a replacement component. A prototype can combine a custom mechanical assembly with sensors and control software. A design developed for one application can become a useful resource for someone working on a similar problem. We know that most projects come with constraints. Budgets are finite, deadlines matter, and the first design usually needs changes. We value clear communication about what is feasible, what still needs testing, and where a simpler approach may make more sense. We work with clients, technical collaborators, and manufacturing partners to move projects forward with those realities in mind. As KM3D grows, we want to contribute to Canada’s ability to design, build, and support its own technology. That starts with doing useful work, sharing knowledge, and helping people get their projects to the next stage.

Whether you have an idea, an existing design, or a problem you have not yet figured out how to solve, we would be glad to hear about it.
